Q. Can I leave my rain gauge up year round?
A. With a glass vial rain gauge, they need to be taken down as they will break with the expansion of water when it freezes. As for the plastic tube rain gauges, these can be left out in the cold weather, as our patented design will keep them from breaking from the ice for 2-5 years depending on the amount of sunlight it receives every year (sunlight deteriorates plastics over time.)
Q. How is 4 inches of water in my rain gauge equivalent to 1 inch of rain?
A. This is because of the ratio of the funnel to the tube diameter. On our largest rain gauge, there is approximately a 4.25:1 ratio funnel to tube. So it will take 4.25 inches of rain in the tube to equal one inch of actual rain.
Q. How do I mount my rain gauge on a deck or fence?
A. Two wood screws work best, but remember that many woods are treated to prevent rotting, so make sure to use coated screws.
Q. Will the color fade over time in the sunlight?
A. Headwind Consumer Products has UV inhibitors in their plastics. With that said, the color will fade slightly, but there will not be a massive color change.
Q. What do I do if my float is stuck in the bottom of the tube?
A. It is probably due to mold or mildew that is keeping float from raising with the water, clean the bottom of the tube and this should remedy the problem.
Q. How do I accurately read my EZ Read rain gauge?
A. The middle of the float is the most accurate reading of the rain gauge.
Q. How deep do I need to put the stake in the ground?
A. The stake needs to go into the ground for the bottom of the rain gauge to be within 1 inch of the ground. This will give it stability and make it read more accurately.
Q. How do I set up my digital rain gauge?
A. Place the batteries in the outside/rain collector unit first, then within 2 minutes, place the batteries in the inside/readout unit. When the two units have connected, the dashes will change to 0.00 on the readout. Make sure to set the clock on the unit as well, as it keeps track of daily, weekly, and monthly totals. If this is not done the daily readout might be incorrect.
Q. How do I mount the rain collector unit of my wireless rain gauges?
A. Using screws and a drill, simply place a screw in each hole in the bottom of the rain collector unit and tighten the screw to be flush with the top of the hole. Do not overtighten! Also make sure that your rain collector unit has an unobstructed view of the sky.
